Although focused on both traditional divorce and collaborative law, Attorney Youso also provides advice and representation on a variety of other family law matters, including:

Paternity
A paternity action involves formally establishing an individual as father of your child, if you are not married to that person.  There are different legal steps which Attorney Youso can help you take to protect yourself and your child, depending on your circumstances.  Those steps might address whose name is on the birth certificate, whether child support is necessary and if so in what amount, whether custody of the child should be sole or joint, and what is an appropriate child visitation schedule between parents.

Separation
Separation is similar to a divorce in that the couple is typically living apart, and this arrangement has been legitimized by mutual agreement or a court order.  A separation differs from a divorce in that the law recognizes the chance that a couple might come back together.  Separated spouses cannot re-marry until a divorce has been finalized.  If you are separated, it is critical that you make your arrangement “legal” – potentially protecting you from a wide variety of complications involving debt, child custody, support, and more.

Modifications
Whether you obtained a court order of divorce, separation or paternity, sometimes your life or your ex-partner's changes, and modifications to the order are appropriate.  A modification motion is a separate legal action brought by the attorney to address the situation as it exists now, rather than as it existed at the time the court order was first put into place.  Has your income gone down/up?  Does your child have new special needs? Is the visitation schedule just not being honored or not working out to the benefit of your child?  It is possible your order can be changed to fix the problems as you see them.

Domestic Violence
Domestic Abuse includes physical violence, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as the one-sided financial control of one partner.  Oftentimes an individual may need a restraining order to protect herself and her child.  Attorney Youso’s practice gives special attention to those family law cases which involve domestic abuse, and she is very experienced in giving assistance to and promoting the safety of victims.   Victims of abuse who desire separation or divorce from their abusive partners are especially vulnerable to experiencing an escalation in the violence, and should seek shelter and professional advice before rushing to file their family court actions.
